An OEM engineering guide to glass components for smart locks and security hardware: touch control panels, sensor and camera covers, IR transmission, outdoor durability and B2B sourcing criteria
A smart lock lives or dies by the small glass surfaces a user touches and the ones that watch the door. The touch panel is the interface a finger meets every single day; the sensor and camera decorative cover is the window that lets a face-recognition module or a doorbell camera see the world while keeping the optics clean and protected. Both are glass components, but they answer to completely different physics — one is an electrical interface, the other an optical one — and a supplier that treats them as the same part will quietly compromise both. This guide treats the two as one device family, the way they are actually designed and built for a smart-lock programme, and explains how B2B buyers should specify, validate and source them. It covers the TR-030 control button panel and the TR-025 sensor and camera decorative cover as the reference parts, and shows how they slot into a wider product center of glass and acrylic components for smart devices.
1. What Smart-Lock and Security Glass Covers Are
A glass cover for a smart lock is not a screen protector and it is not a camera lens protector for a phone, even though it borrows from both. It is a structural, decorative and functional skin that sits between the outside world and the electronics inside a door lock, a video doorbell, a gate controller or a building-access terminal. The term "cover" is doing a lot of work: on one part of the device it covers a touch sensing layer, and on another it covers an imaging or proximity sensor. The two jobs pull the design in opposite directions, which is exactly why they deserve their own specification track rather than being lumped together as "the glass".
On a smart lock the glass is one of the few surfaces a customer judges the whole product by. It is handled constantly, exposed to weather, and expected to keep working for
The cover sits over a capacitive sensing layer and must let finger commands through while staying hard, flat and readable. It is an electrical window first and a cosmetic surface second.
The cover sits over a camera, a structured-light projector or an IR detector and must pass visible and infrared light cleanly while shielding the optics from dust, water and impact.
Silk-screen icons, a colour tint, a metalised ring or a printed LOGO turn a plain disc into the visible identity of the lock. Decoration has to survive the same
The reference pair in this guide is TR-030, described by the manufacturer as a smart device control button panel with responsive touch interfaces, and TR-025, a decorative cover component for smart lock sensors and cameras. Neither page publishes fixed dimensions, because both are built to the customer's own drawing — which is the normal situation for OEM/ODM glass, and the reason a good specification document matters more than a catalogue number.
2. Two Distinct Product Roles in One Device Family
Treating the control panel and the sensor cover as siblings is useful for sourcing — they share substrate, coating and decoration lines — but the engineering inside each is different. Confusing the two is the single most common mistake in smart-lock glass specification, because both are "a piece of glass on the front" and both end up in the same drawing pack.
| Aspect | TR-030 control panel glass | TR-025 sensor and camera cover |
|---|---|---|
| Primary function | Carry capacitive touch signals from a finger to the sensing layer beneath | Let visible and IR light reach a camera or sensor, and protect the optics |
| Dominant spec | Touch sensitivity, flatness, icon-window clarity, edge feel | Transmission, IR pass-band, anti-glare, hydrophobicity |
| Failure mode that matters | Dead spots, false touches, unreadable icons in sunlight | Fogging, IR blocking, flare, image haze, water beading on the lens |
| Decoration | Back-side silk-screen of icons, numbers, LOGO; can be backlit | Ring or frame colour, LOGO, sometimes a printed aperture mask |
| Customization | Color / LOGO can be customized per the published |
Color / LOGO can be customized per the published |
The two reference descriptions make the split concrete. TR-030, the smart device control button panel, is described by the manufacturer as follows: "TenWinglass customizes smart device control button panels with responsive touch interfaces. We provide OEM/ODM services for durable glass control surfaces in smart home and electronics." TR-025, the smart lock sensor and camera decorative cover component, is described as: "TenWinglass custom manufactures decorative cover components for smart lock sensors and cameras. We offer OEM solutions for aesthetic and durable glass covers in smart home systems." Read together, the two statements describe one coherent family — durable, customizable glass surfaces engineered for the smart home — but the panel is an interface and the cover is a window.

Both parts are built to order, so the sensible way to start a programme is to send the lock's front-face drawing and ask for a matched pair quoted together. The same supplier can carry the touch panel and the optical cover through one qualification cycle, which is exactly how the broader control panel line and the sensor cover line are positioned for OEM buyers.
3. Substrate Selection for Exterior Security Glass
The substrate is the foundation of every property that follows — hardness, transmission, IR behaviour and cost. For a smart lock mounted outdoors, the shortlist is tempered glass, high-alumina glass and PMMA (acrylic), with polycarbonate entering only for structural rings. The trade-offs are sharper than most specification sheets admit, because a door-mounted device is far harsher on materials than an indoor gadget.
| Substrate | Hardness and wear | Optical and IR | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tempered glass | 6–7 Mohs; 9H surface; shatters safely into granules | Transmittance 91%+, neutral IR; accepts AR and AF coatings | |
| High-alumina glass | Higher ion-exchange depth; better drop and bend resistance | Transmittance 91–93%; very stable IR pass-band | Where impact and vandal resistance are primary |
| PMMA (acrylic) | 2–3 Mohs; scratch-prone unless hard-coated | Transmittance up to 92%; good IR; lower cost, lighter | Budget covers and decorative rings, with a hard coat |
| Polycarbonate | 2 Mohs; very high impact, easily scratched | Transmittance 88–90%; higher haze; yellows without UV stabiliser | Structural non-optical rings, not apertures |
| Metal ring plus glass insert | Metal frame carries load; glass carries function | Depends on the insert substrate chosen | Premium locks wanting a machined-metal bezel look |
For an exterior smart lock, the default answer is tempered or high-alumina glass for both the touch panel and the optical cover. PMMA is attractive on cost and weight, but an uncovered acrylic surface will haze and scratch within a season of outdoor use, and a scratched cover over a camera is a permanent image-quality defect. The anti-shatter and anti-reflection know-how that supports these substrates is shared across the anti-reflection film and anti-shatter film product families, which is why a supplier with those lines is better placed to tool a lock cover quickly. The broader material discussion for consumer electronics is also covered in the OEM glass components guide.
4. Touch Sensitivity and Cover Thickness
A capacitive touch panel works by detecting the tiny change in capacitance a finger induces through the dielectric above the sensing electrode. The cover glass is that dielectric. Its thickness, dielectric constant and flatness all change how much signal reaches the controller, and therefore how reliably a touch registers — especially a wet finger, a gloved finger or a quick tap. This is the first place where the "thicker is tougher" instinct fights the "thinner is more sensitive" reality.
| Variable | Effect on touch | Design response |
|---|---|---|
| Cover thickness | Thicker glass reduces sensed signal; beyond a point touches become unreliable | Keep the active area thin, or increase electrode sensitivity in firmware |
| Flatness and warp | A bowed cover creates an air gap that kills sensitivity in spots | Tight flatness spec; bond the cover directly to the sensor film |
| Silk-screen ink thickness | Thick ink under the touch zone blocks signal where icons sit | Print icons in the dead border, not over active electrodes |
| Moisture and gloves | Water films and gloved hands reduce or fake the signal | Water-rejection algorithm plus a slightly higher drive voltage |
| Surface coating | AF layer changes the dielectric only marginally; mostly harmless | Keep AF thin and uniform so it does not add local variation |
The practical rule is to specify the thinnest cover that still meets the mechanical and decorative needs of the lock, then tune the controller to it rather than the other way around. A 0.7 mm to 1.1 mm tempered panel is typical for a lock keypad; going thicker for "robustness" without re-tuning the firmware is the classic cause of missed touches that get blamed on the electronics. Because the TR-030 panel is built to the customer drawing, the thickness is a joint decision between buyer and supplier, and it should be recorded on the drawing as a dimension with tolerance, not left to the factory's default.
5. Capacitive Touch and Backlit Icon Windows
Most smart-lock keypads are not a flat sheet of touch glass — they are a printed glass surface with discrete icons or digits that light up when approached. That backlighting is delivered through a light-guide or through aperture windows in the silk-screen layer, and the cover has to manage both the touch signal and the light path at the same time. Getting one right while breaking the other is easy, which is why this is a design task and not a commodity print job.
The mechanism is straightforward: a printed border hides the LED or the edge-lit light-guide, and small clear windows in the ink let light out where each icon or digit sits. The ink must be opaque enough to hide the light source from the side, but the windows must be aligned precisely to the underlying icon electrodes so the lit symbol matches the touch target. Misalignment of even a fraction of a millimetre makes an icon look shifted from its touch zone — a defect users read instantly as "cheap".
An LED at the panel edge feeds a printed or etched guide that spreads light behind the icons. Gives even, low-power backlight and a thin stack, but demands very tight window-to-electrode alignment.
Each icon has its own small LED shining through a clear window in the ink. Simpler optics, easier to service, but more components and a thicker local stack at each point.
Special ink makes icons nearly invisible in daylight and bright when backlit. Premium look, but the ink chemistry must survive

6. Infrared Transmission for Face and Night Vision
The TR-025 cover is an optical window, and its most unforgiving requirement is infrared transmission. Modern smart locks use near-IR for face recognition, for structured-light depth, and for the IR illuminator that lets a camera see at night. A cover that looks perfectly clear to the human eye can still be a brick wall to a 940 nm IR LED, and that failure is invisible on the bench and fatal in the field.
| Wavelength need | What blocks it | What to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Visible light (400–700 nm) | Tinted or smoked glass, heavy AR mismatch | Neutral, high visible transmittance for the camera image |
| Near-IR (850–940 nm) | Glass with iron content, IR-cut coatings, some tints | Low-iron substrate and an IR-neutral coating stack; measure at 940 nm |
| Structured-light projector | Surface ripple, wedge, or uneven coating thickness | Tight flatness and uniform thickness across the window |
| Night illuminator glow | Surface reflection back into the lens causing flare | AR coating tuned to suppress the IR band as well as visible |
The key engineering point is that the coating stack must be designed for the IR band, not just the visible band. A standard AR coating optimised for visible light can actually dip in transmission exactly where a 940 nm illuminator operates, throttling night vision. The supplier should report transmission at the device's actual IR wavelength, not only at 550 nm, and the buyer should put that number on the drawing. The same discipline of measuring transmission at the wavelengths that matter is the subject of the anti-reflection coating technology guide and the discussion of camera cover materials in the smartphone camera lens cover materials article.
7. Anti-Glare Treatment and Smudge Resistance
A smart-lock panel lives in direct sunlight and gets poked by fingers, so two surface properties decide whether it stays usable and presentable: anti-glare (so the icon backlight or the camera preview is readable in bright light) and an oleophobic, smudge-resistant top layer (so fingerprints do not turn the surface into a grubby mirror). These are coating decisions, and they trade off against each other if handled carelessly.
| Surface layer | Benefit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| AG (anti-glare) etch | Diffuses reflections; readable keypad in sunlight | Slight haze; can soften a camera image if overdone |
| AR (anti-reflection) | Boosts transmission, cuts ghosting for the camera | No glare reduction on its own; pair with AG where needed |
| AF (oleophobic) | Repels fingerprint oil; easy to wipe clean | Wears off over time; must be tested for durability |
| Combined AG+AR+AF | Readable, clear and clean in one stack | More process steps; needs careful optical balancing |
For a touch panel the priority is usually a light AG etch plus an AF layer, because the user is reading icons and pressing them, not photographing through the glass. For the TR-025 camera cover the priority flips: an AR coating dominates, and any AG must be kept mild so it does not haze the image. The two parts therefore want different stacks even though they share a substrate family, which is another reason to specify them together rather than buying a generic "glass disc" for both. The smudge and grip angle is explored further in the anti-glare and fingerprint reduction article.
8. Outdoor Weatherability, Hydrophobics and Sealing
A phone lives in a pocket; a smart lock lives on a door in every season. Weatherability is therefore not a nice-to-have but the central reliability question. Three things defeat a lock cover outdoors: water filming over the camera, UV yellowing the decoration, and a failed seal letting moisture behind the glass to fog the optics permanently.
A hydrophobic top layer is the first line of defence for the optical cover. Water should bead and roll off rather than sheet across the lens, because a water film is a permanent blur on every night-vision frame. The hydrophobic layer is usually bundled with the AF oleophobic layer as a single fluoropolymer coat, and its performance is measured as a water
| Hazard | Symptom | Mitigation in the cover |
|---|---|---|
| Rain on camera | Blurred or streaked night images | Hydrophobic + oleophobic top coat; slight front-surface crown |
| UV exposure | Yellowing, faded LOGO, cracked ink | UV-stable inks and coatings; outdoor-grade PVD where used |
| Thermal cycling | Seal fatigue, internal condensation | Matched CTE at the bond; validated gasket or adhesive seal |
| Dust ingress | Grit under the bezel, scratched optics | IP-rated perimeter seal designed into the assembly, not added after |
The IP rating of the lock is an assembly property, but the cover is where it is won or lost, because the glass-to-housing interface is the most likely leak path. The cover drawing should define the sealing interface — a captured gasket, a bead of specified adhesive, or a metal ring compression seal — and that interface should be validated as part of the cover qualification, not assumed from the housing drawing. The coating and material choices that keep a cover stable outdoors are the same ones discussed for other exterior glass in the tempered glass durability article.
9. Metal Ring and Glass Hybrid Assembly Tolerance
Premium smart locks rarely use a bare glass disc. They use a hybrid: a machined or stamped metal ring that carries the load and the look, with a glass insert that carries the touch or optical function. The hybrid looks great and survives drops better, but it introduces a tolerance stack-up between two dissimilar materials that expands and contracts at different rates with temperature.
| Interface | Failure if wrong | Control |
|---|---|---|
| Ring bore to glass edge | Glass rattles, or is crushed by the ring | Defined clearance with an elastic interlayer |
| Glass flatness in the ring | Bow creates touch dead spots or optical wedge | Flatness held on the glass before assembly |
| Aperture centring in ring | Camera off-axis, vignetting | Datum-referenced positioning of glass to ring |
| Thermal mismatch | Ring squeezes glass at high temperature, cracks it | CTE-matched interlayer; validated thermal cycle test |
| Seal at ring face | Moisture enters at the metal-glass joint | Specified gasket or adhesive at the perimeter |
The discipline here is the same one applied to camera module rings on phones: the glass and the ring are qualified as a pair, not separately, and the thermal cycle test is mandatory because the failure only shows up after months on a sunny door. Because both the TR-030 panel and the TR-025 cover are built to the customer's drawing, the hybrid tolerance is something to agree up front with the supplier rather than discover in first articles. The assembly thinking carries over from the smartphone glass cover project, where the same substrate and finishing standards apply across a device's glass set.
10. Decoration: Silk-Screen, PVD and Brand Customization
Both reference parts share the same published
Icons, digits, borders and LOGO printed on the back of the glass so they are protected by the substrate. UV-stable inks required for outdoor rating.
A thin metal film gives a premium ring or frame colour — black, gold, champagne — with far better wear than paint. Must stay off the optical aperture.
A light substrate tint for
The crucial rule is that decoration must never intrude on the functional zones. On the TR-030 panel, ink over an active touch electrode kills sensitivity; on the TR-025 cover, metallisation over the aperture creates flare and blocks IR. The decoration is applied to the non-functional border, and the boundary between "decorated" and "optical" is a dimension on the drawing, not a workshop judgement. Customization options across the wider range are summarised in the custom cover plate guide and the innovations and trends article.
11. Durability and Anti-Vandal Considerations
A front door is a hostile environment. Beyond weather, a lock cover has to survive keys scraped across it, deliberate impact, and in some markets attempted tampering. Durability here means two different things for the two parts: the touch panel must keep sensing after abuse, and the camera cover must keep transmitting and stay clear after abuse.
| Threat | Panel consequence | Cover consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Surface scratch | Cosmetic; may scatter backlight | Scatters light into the lens, softens images |
| Hard impact | Crack or shatter; loss of touch | Crack over aperture; permanent image defect |
| Chemical attack | Ink or coating degradation | Coating wipe-off, loss of hydrophobicity |
| Tamper / pry | Bezel forced; seal broken | Ring deformation; glass loosens in housing |
Tempered and high-alumina glass resist casual scratches well, and the AF/AG stack adds a sacrificial surface that takes the abuse before the substrate does. For genuine vandal resistance the hybrid metal-ring construction of section 9 is the stronger answer, because the ring absorbs the first hit. In every case the acceptance test is not "does it look scratched" but "does it still sense and still image" — which is why the functional checks in the QC section matter more than cosmetic grading alone. The protection philosophy is the same one described for other covered devices in the glass versus sapphire cover article.
12. Manufacturing Workflow for Lock Glass
A lock cover is produced on the same class of equipment as other precision glass covers, which is why a supplier with a mature cover-glass line can tool it quickly. The sequence for a TR-030 touch panel and a TR-025 optical cover runs along the same backbone, diverging only at the coating and decoration steps.
| 1 | Substrate selection and incoming inspection — low-iron glass or high-alumina sheet checked for bubbles, inclusions and thickness uniformity before any cutting. |
| 2 | Cutting and shaping — CNC or laser cutting to the panel or cover outline with minimal edge micro-cracks. |
| 3 | Aperture and feature machining — camera window cut for TR-025; icon-window clearances printed or etched for TR-030, datum-referenced. |
| 4 | Edge treatment — grinding, polishing or chemical edge to a defined profile; edge blackening where flare control demands it. |
| 5 | Cleaning — multi-stage ultrasonic clean and high-intensity inspection for slurry or fingerprints. |
| 6 | Coating — AR and AF for TR-025 (IR-tuned), AG plus AF for TR-030, with per-batch transmission and |
| 7 | Decoration — silk-screen icons and LOGO, or PVD ring colour, applied to the non-functional zone only. |
| 8 | Assembly — hybrid ring bonding or direct bonding to the sensor/housing, with the seal interface defined and controlled. |
| 9 | Final inspection and packing — dimensional check, cosmetic grading, optical and touch sampling, then protective film and tray packing. |
Steps 6 and 8 carry the highest process risk: the coating decides whether the cover is optically transparent or a permanent filter, and the assembly decides whether the seal holds for
13. Quality Control and AQL Standards
| Inspection area | Criterion | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Outline dimensions | Within drawing tolerance; sampled per lot | CMM or optical measurement |
| Aperture position and size | Centred to the sensor; within tolerance | Vision system or optical comparator |
| IR and visible transmission | Measured at device wavelengths, per batch | Spectrophotometer at 550 nm and 940 nm |
| Touch function (panel) | Functional test on the actual sensing stack | |
| Coating hardness and adhesion | Pass pencil hardness and cross-hatch | ASTM D3363 / ASTM D3359 sampling |
| Hydrophobic and AF | ||
| Decoration alignment | Icons match electrodes; LOGO within register | Overlay check against master |
| AQL sampling | Agreed AQL for critical, major, minor defects | ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 or ISO 2859-1 |
Two documents eliminate most disputes: a physical limit sample defining the worst acceptable cosmetic condition, and a per-batch optical report covering transmission at the actual wavelengths. Buyers should require both before mass production. The same QC framework is applied across the supplier's other lines, including the guidance in the how to choose a reliable glass manufacturer article.
14. B2B Sourcing Checklist for Lock Glass
| 1 | |
| 2 | Fix the substrate in writing: tempered or high-alumina glass, with the IR behaviour noted for the cover. |
| 3 | Require transmission measured at the device's IR wavelength (typically 850 or 940 nm) as well as visible, with a per-batch report. |
| 4 | Define touch-panel thickness and flatness explicitly, and confirm the firmware will be tuned to that thickness. |
| 5 | Specify the coating stack per part: AR+AF for the cover, AG+AF for the panel, with |
| 6 | Define the sealing interface and the IP target, and require a thermal-cycle test that includes the hybrid ring if used. |
| 7 | Approve a cosmetic limit sample and lock colour and LOGO against a master chip before mass production. |
| 8 | State the AQL for critical, major and minor defects, and require a functional touch and image test on first articles. |
| 9 | Confirm customization of colour and LOGO is available on both parts, as stated in their published |
| 10 | Verify packaging protects the coated face — a cover shipped without a protective film arrives scratched no matter how good the coating. |
Specifying the touch panel and the optical cover together, through one supplier and one qualification cycle, is the most reliable way to keep the two parts consistent in substrate, coating and decoration. The full component range that supports such a programme is in the product center, and the next-generation cover thinking is summarised in the innovative glass cover solutions article.
15. Frequently Asked Questions
Can one glass part serve as both the touch panel and the camera cover?
Usually not on a single disc. The touch panel is an electrical interface tuned for sensitivity, while the camera cover is an optical window tuned for IR transmission and anti-glare. They can sit side by side on one front plate, but each zone needs its own substrate thickness, coating stack and tolerance. Treating them as separate specified parts, as with TR-030 and TR-025, is the safer approach.
Does the glass block the infrared used for face recognition and night vision?
It can, and that is the most common silent failure. A cover that looks clear to the eye may still absorb or reflect near-IR at 850 or 940 nm. The coating must be designed and measured for the IR band, and transmission at the device's actual wavelength should be a drawing requirement, not an assumption.
How thick should the touch panel glass be?
Thinner improves touch sensitivity but reduces mechanical margin; thicker improves robustness but can starve the sensing signal if the firmware is not retuned. A typical lock keypad uses 0.7 to 1.1 mm of tempered glass, with the exact value agreed on the drawing and matched to the controller. Because TR-030 is built to the customer's drawing, thickness is a joint specification, not a catalogue default.
Can the colour and logo be customized for OEM orders?
Yes. Both reference parts publish color and LOGO customization as a
How is the cover sealed against rain and dust?
The IP rating of the lock is an assembly property decided at the glass-to-housing interface. The cover drawing should define a captured gasket, a specified adhesive bead, or a metal-ring compression seal, and that interface should be validated as part of cover qualification, including a thermal-cycle test when a hybrid ring is used.
